Description: Gattonside is a pretty, south-facing village beside the River Tweed and opposite the town of Melrose. Traditionally the village was known for its fruit trees and was the garden for the monks of Melrose Abbey. Today it is a village with a variety of gardens. You can visit small, cottage type gardens with mixed herbaceous borders, Dahlia enthusiasts' gardens and even ponds with fish. There are new gardens and more established gardens - with mixed borders, vegetables, fruit cages as well as many beautiful trees, copper beech and oak to name but a few.

Directions: Short walk from Melrose over the chain bridge. Twenty minute walk along the River Tweed from Tweedbank Railway Station. By car access off the A68 signposted Gattonside.

Other details: Parking, teas and a small plant sale at Allerly TD6 9LT.
