New gardens opening in June

June should be spent in gardens, in your own, in a park or visiting one open with Scotland's Gardens Scheme. It's definitely a month to get out and about in green spaces. This month there are some wonderful news gardens opening for the first time, all across the country. Some focusing on wildlife, another with a wonderful old walled gardens. There are so many hidden gardens to explore!

Blairwood House, one of the Three Hidden Gardens, Aberdeenshire

A mature, densely planted, one acre garden full of flowering shrubs, herbaceous perennials and bulbs. The garden is laid out in naturally curving lines to harmonise with the surrounding fields. It includes a pond, a small but beautifully designed vegetable garden, a herb garden and a sunken patio. A lovely short walk leads to the river and back. No disabled access.

All three gardens open Sunday 10 June, 11am - 4pm.

Blairwood House

Dun Eaglais

Dun Eaglais, part of Kippen Village gardens

The historic home of the artist D.Y.Cameron, built in stages between 1902-1924 and finished in the Scottish Renaissance and Arts and Crafts manner. It is thought that the terraced gardens were influenced by landscape designer, T.H.Mawson. Wonderful specimen trees, rhododendrons and perennials, full of twists and turns revealing more around every corner.

Kippen Village is open Sunday 17 June, 1:30pm - 5:30pm

Parkvilla

A south facing Victorian Walled Garden, lovingly developed from a design started in 1990, for colour and interest all year. Enjoy densely planted herbaceous borders, pause under the pergola clothed in clematis, honeysuckle and rambling roses, continue on to the bottom of the garden where three ponds and a wild flower bed reflect a strong focus on wildlife. A hidden gem of a garden that has won awards including Ellon Best Garden, and includes plants rarely seen in NE Scotland.
