Ruchlaw House, is an impressive 17th century laird’s house built by Archibald Sydserff. The walled garden has a -south-facing aspect with well-maintained rubble walls and a thick holly hedge creating a monastic ambience. The garden is divided into four lawns separated by hedging, pleached fruit trees and herbaceous borders which have been restored and enhanced by the current owner. The garden is in its prime between April and June when the tulips, alliums and catmint form a riot of colour and are arranged to great effect. Within the garden are two sundials; one of particular historic note has an octagonal shaft. Visitors can also enjoy a number of walks around the grounds.

Directions: From the A199 at East Linton, follow the signs to Stenton, taking the left-hand turn after passing under the A1. Follow the road for three miles, passing through Ruchlaw Mains Farm; Ruchlaw House is then the next property on the left. From the A1 at the West Barns roundabout, follow the B6370 south, to and through Stenton towards Garvald, taking the first right turn after crossing the bridge at the bottom of the village.
