Opening in 1982, Calderglen Zoo, at approximately an acre in size, is nestled in the middle of Calderglen Country Park, a wooded glen featuring eight miles of nature trails; picnic areas; golf course and cafe. The zoo is home to a wide range of exotic and critically endangered animals, understandably, often seen as the star attraction. However, the ornamental garden are the 'unsung hero', providing a beautiful relaxing setting for visitors to enjoy the animals, featuring a large collection of specimens, from mature shrubs and trees, such as the majestic 600 year old yew tree and dawn redwood, to the colourful herbaceous borders, wildlife pond and tropical conservatory, with exotic plants from all around the world, such as banana plants and palms Where else in Scotland can you sit in a garden, admiring an ancient yew tree, listening to a waterfall while being 'serenaded' by kookaburras and laughing thrushes!
Directions: From the Kingsway/A725, take the first exit onto Strathaven Road/A726 heading for Strathaven. In 0.7miles turn left onto Calderglen Park Road, follow the one way sytem to the main car park, the zoo is on the left.
Other details: Cafe in the courtyard with a range of sweet and savoury offerings for sale. There will be a small selection of plants available and some nature-based activities for children.
