Craigentinny Telferton Allotments Open Day

We are delighted to share this blog ahead of the Craigentinny Terlferton Allotments Open Day on Sunday 27th July.
Our many thanks to Rosie McGlynn for this wonderful article detailing the story and ambitions of the Allotments.

The Craigentinny Telferton Allotments are a community run haven for people and wildlife. Nestled in the East of Edinburgh, this site has been a home for allotments for over 100 years. Many of our plot holders have been involved for over thirty years and this longevity provides a wealth of knowledge and support to newer plotholders. The Allotments act as a green lung in our increasingly congested built environment.

Over the next three years the Allotment Charity are looking to boost the biodiversity and accessibility of the site. There are opportunities to create wildlife corridors, enhance spaces across the site to improve wildlife welfare and to boost the overall accessibility of the allotments. It is increasingly challenging for those us with additional mobility needs to spend time in nature friendly environments and as a Charity we are committed to addressing such barriers. We will be focusing our fundraising efforts towards biodiversity, harnessing the natural environment to generate and store our own electricity and enabling greater access to our site.

Money raised at this year’s Open Day will be directed towards supporting funding applications to carry out feasibility studies to achieve our ambitions to make the allotments even more beneficial to our natural environment and ecology.

Join us on the 27th of July between 2 and 4pm to explore our beautiful site, listen to live music, enjoy some home baking and explore our range of plants, botanical tote bags, cook books and raised bed kits. Funds raised on the day will support both the Allotments Charity and the Scotland’s Gardens Scheme core charities.
